| I think it may be the double meaning inherent in windows which has fascinated artists for centuries. Note how often they appear in ancient works which were not that interested in landscapes as such... Could this be an early glimmering of the picture plane? A feeling not quite conscious that there was a significance here to the stopping off place between outside and inside, before Leon Batista Alberti showed it to us all? | ![]() |
